Environmental Working Group- The Power of Information Founded in 1993, the mission of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is to use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment. Their team of scientists, engineers, policy experts, lawyers and computer programmers pores over government data, legal documents, scientific studies and their own laboratory tests to expose threats to your health and the environment, and to find solutions. Their research brings to light unsettling facts that you have a right to know. It shames and shakes up polluters and their lobbyists. It rattles politicians and shapes policy. It persuades bureaucracies to rethink science and strengthen regulation. It provides practical information you can use to protect your family and community.
Arbor Day Foundation- Inspiring people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees Founded in 1972, The National Arbor Day Foundation inspires people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. They envision a world where trees and forests are abundant, healthy, and sustainable, and highly valued by all people. Through mass-media communications, by providing low-cost trees for planting, and by producing high-quality, easy-to-use educational materials, they work to make tree planting and care something in which nearly everyone can be involved. They also create mechanisms through which the average individual can directly support positive tree conservation and education projects. It is their constant goal to expand a person's desire to plant a tree into a lifelong enthusiasm for tree planting and care, and for positive involvement in conservation issues relating to trees.
Animal Haven- A shelter for cats and dogs Animal Haven finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area, and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption. Founded in 1967, they operate a limited admission shelter/adoption center in Manhattan and a mobile adoption van. They also provide programs that enhance the bond between animals and people.
Animal Welfare Institute- Reducing the pain and fear inflicted on animals Horses brutally butchered for sale abroad. Dogs and cats stolen for experimentation. Wildlife caught in brutal traps. Farm animals confined in coffin-like crates. Majestic whales slaughtered at sea. The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) works around the world and on Capitol Hill to address these issues and other forms of animal suffering. Founded in 1951, their mission is to reduce the sum total of pain and fear inflicted on animals by humans. In response to the spread of factory farms, they launched their Animal Welfare Approved husbandry standards program in 2006, prioritizing the well-being of animals and the sustainability of humane, independent family farms.
